India has reiterated its concern over Canada's stance on providing space to separatists, terrorists, and anti-India elements within the country. Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, responded to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent comments about a potential shift in India-Canada ties.
Bagchi maintained India's consistent position, emphasizing the need for action against extremists misusing freedom of speech in Canada. The strained relations between the two countries escalated when Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India rejected the allegations as absurd. Trudeau suggested a growing understanding that aggressive posturing wouldn't resolve issues and expressed openness to collaboration. The recent US indictment of Indian national Nikhil Gupta for an assassination plot against Sikh extremist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has added complexity. India, while initiating an inquiry into the matter, emphasized the lack of specific evidence from Canada to support their allegations.
Despite these challenges, Trudeau emphasized Canada's commitment to standing up for human rights and the rule of law, expressing a desire to focus on trade and the Indo-Pacific strategy.
