India Trashes US Report On Alleged Rights Abuse In Manipur

India Trashes US Report On Alleged Rights Abuse In Manipur

India strongly rebuked a US State Department report citing "significant human rights abuses" in Manipur post-violence, calling it biased and poorly informed. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, dismissed the report during a media briefing, urging others to do the same.

The '2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: India report highlighted clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, leading to human rights violations. It mentioned PM Modi's condemnation of the incident as "shameful" and his call for action.

Additionally, the report noted a 60-hour search of BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai, following a documentary about PM Modi. While tax authorities cited irregularities in tax payments, the equipment of unrelated journalists was seized.

Another issue highlighted was Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's conviction and disqualification from the Lok Sabha for defaming the Modi surname, later stayed by the Supreme Court, leading to his reinstatement.

Despite these concerns, the report acknowledged positive developments, such as the government permitting a Shia march in Srinagar to mark Muharram, a first since its ban in 1989, with some restrictions on slogans and logos.

Overall, India's response reflects a staunch rejection of the report's findings, emphasizing its perceived biases and limited understanding of the country's complexities.
