Australia Tightens Visa Rules for Overseas Students

Australia announced on Monday its plans to tighten visa regulations for international students and low-skilled workers, aiming to reduce its migrant intake by half over the next two years. The government, citing a "broken" migration system, intends to overhaul existing policies following an anticipated peak in net immigration at 510,000 in 2022-23.

Official projections forecast a decline to around 250,000 in 2024-25 and 2025-26, aligning with pre-COVID levels. Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil emphasized the government's efforts to find the optimal balance in the migration system, asserting that targeted reforms are already exerting downward pressure on net overseas migration. The formal release of the comprehensive migration strategy is scheduled for later on Monday.
