Mamata Banerjee Attacks EC, BJP for SIR

Mamata Banerjee Attacks EC, BJP for SIR

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp, multi-pronged offensive against the BJP, alleging the party is “trading Gujarat for Bengal” and resorting to electoral fraud to secure victories. Addressing a massive protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, she predicted the BJP would face a stunning defeat in Gujarat next year, claiming the party was ready to sacrifice its home turf to capture Bengal.

Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating electoral processes, citing Bihar’s recent landslide win and the controversial Rs 10,000 stipend offered to women voters as examples of “vote-buying tactics”. She also targeted the Election Commission — calling it the “BJP Commission” — and questioned the urgency behind the SIR exercise ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections in Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Kerala.

The Trinamool chief echoed opposition concerns that the revision disproportionately removes voters from marginalised communities under the pretext of identifying ‘infiltrators’. She demanded a three-year review window instead of a rushed pre-election process.

Banerjee also expressed anguish over the deaths of booth-level officers, including suicides linked to SIR-related stress, asking why such pressure was necessary months before voting.
