Justice Surya Kant Takes Over As New Chief Justice Of India

Justice Surya Kant, a distinguished jurist known for his role in several landmark judgments, was sworn in on Monday as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai and will serve a tenure of nearly 15 months, demitting office on February 9, 2027, upon attaining the age of 65.

Born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant’s journey reflects resilience, academic excellence, and an unwavering commitment to the law. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and earned his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.

He began his legal career the same year at the Hisar district court before moving to Chandigarh in 1985 to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Over the years, he earned a formidable reputation for clarity of thought and courtroom precision, culminating in his appointment as the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in 2000.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Justice Surya Kant secured first-class first in his Master’s in Law from Kurukshetra University in 2011, underscoring his dedication to continuous learning and legal scholarship.
