BJP Clinches Victory in Chandigarh Mayoral Elections

BJP Clinches Victory in Chandigarh Mayoral Elections

In a keenly contested Chandigarh mayoral election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious, securing 19 votes against the 17 polled by the AAP-Congress alliance. BJP’s Harpreet Kaur Babla defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Prem Lata to claim the mayoral post.

The election, held in the assembly hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, began at 11:20 am and concluded by 12:19 pm. This high-stakes battle saw intense political maneuvering, with the BJP managing to consolidate its position despite a strong challenge from the opposition alliance.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation comprises 35 members, including elected councillors and the Chandigarh MP, who holds voting rights as an ex-officio member. Before the election, the AAP had 13 councillors, Congress held 6, BJP controlled 15, and the city’s MP, from Congress, also had a vote. However, days ahead of the polls, Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat switched allegiance to the BJP, strengthening the party’s numbers to 16.

Voting was conducted through a secret ballot, with nominated councillor Ramneek Singh Bedi acting as the presiding officer. In line with the Supreme Court’s directives, retired Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jaishree Thakur was appointed as an independent observer to ensure fairness in the election process. Additionally, the court mandated videography of the proceedings to maintain transparency.

The victory further cements the BJP’s grip over the Chandigarh civic body, reinforcing its political dominance in the union territory. Meanwhile, the AAP-Congress alliance, despite presenting a united front, fell short of securing a win. The outcome is expected to influence the upcoming political equations in Chandigarh and beyond.
