Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the second edition of World Food India, celebrated the significant progress made by India's food processing sector, which he described as a "sunrise" industry. The event, held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, spanned three days and was set to conclude on November 5.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the remarkable growth of the food processing sector, pointing out that it had attracted a noteworthy Rs 50,000 crore in foreign direct investment (FDI) over the past nine years. He attributed this success to the government's pro-industry and pro-farmer policies, emphasizing their role in fostering an environment conducive to investment.
Modi also underlined the sector's achievements, noting that the export of processed food had surged by 150% during this nine-year period, demonstrating India's growing presence in global markets. The country's domestic processing capacity had also seen substantial expansion, showcasing the sector's vitality.
During the event, the prime minister took the opportunity to support grassroots development by disbursing seed capital assistance to more than one lakh Self Help Groups (SHGs). Additionally, he inaugurated a 'food street' as part of 'World Food India 2023,' further highlighting the country's culinary diversity and rich food culture.
The overarching goal of World Food India 2023 is to position India as the 'food basket of the world' and to commemorate 2023 as the International Year of Millets. While the first edition of the event took place in 2017, subsequent years were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, making this year's gathering a crucial platform for showcasing India's achievements and aspirations in the food processing sector on the global stage.
