US Suspends Foreign Aid to Pakistan for Reevaluation

US Suspends Foreign Aid to Pakistan for Reevaluation

The United States has temporarily suspended foreign assistance to Pakistan following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, according to Geo News. This decision has halted several United States Agency for International Development (USAID) projects, including the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), a key initiative supporting cultural heritage conservation.

The US Embassy in Pakistan confirmed that the AFCP fund is crucial for protecting historic sites, museums, and indigenous cultural practices worldwide. However, its operations in Pakistan have now been put on hold.

In addition to cultural projects, five energy-sector initiatives have also been suspended, including the Power Sector Improvement Activity, Clean Energy Loan Portfolio Guarantee Program, and Pakistan Climate Financing Activity.

The decision has further impacted four major economic growth projects, including the Social Protection Activity, which was originally set to run until 2025.

Beyond energy and economic growth, USAID-funded programs in healthcare, agriculture, food security, climate response, education, and democracy have also been affected. Concerns are growing that some of these projects may never resume or could face significant budget cuts.

While the total value of suspended aid remains unknown, Pakistan has yet to officially acknowledge the move or comment on its implications.

Last week, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had ordered a review of all US foreign aid. Emphasizing the administration’s priorities, Rubio stated that every funding decision must align with three key questions: “Does it make America safer? Does it make America stronger? Does it make America more prosperous?”

The aid suspension is seen as part of a broader US policy shift under Trump's leadership, potentially reshaping US-Pakistan relations in the near future.
