U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has issued a stark warning that the Trump administration is preparing to impose steep tariffs on countries that continue purchasing Russian oil, including India, China, and Brazil. Speaking to Fox News, the Republican lawmaker said a 100 per cent tariff on oil-related imports is under consideration, accusing these nations of fueling Russia’s war in Ukraine.
"You're keeping Putin's war machine alive with blood money," Graham said. He also proposed a bill calling for 500 per cent tariffs on imports from nations trading with Russia. According to him, India, China, and Brazil account for around 80 per cent of Russia's crude oil exports.
In a sharp message to Moscow, Graham added that President Trump would no longer tolerate Putin’s aggression. "You made a major league mistake, and your economy is going to continue to be crushed," he warned.
The Biden-Trump handover in January 2025 saw Trump vow to end the Ukraine war "on day one." However, seven months later, the conflict has escalated, with Russia ramping up missile and drone strikes. Trump recently announced new arms for Ukraine and set a 50-day deadline for peace, threatening secondary tariffs if Russia’s trade partners don't pressure Putin.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte echoed Trump’s stance, urging India, Brazil, and China to push Putin toward talks. "Otherwise this will slam back... in a massive way," Rutte said.
India responded firmly, warning against “double standards.” The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that national energy security remains paramount. “We are guided by global markets and prevailing circumstances. We caution against any double standards on the matter,” the statement read, signaling that India will not bow to external pressure while securing affordable energy for its citizens.
