NDA likely to secure majority in Rajya Sabha after bypolls

The BJP-led NDA is on the brink of securing a clear majority in the Rajya Sabha following the upcoming by-elections for 12 seats scheduled for September 3. This majority would bolster the BJP’s ability to pass key legislation, including the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

Currently, in the 229-member upper house, the BJP holds 87 seats, and with its allies, their total rises to 105. An additional six nominated members, who typically support the government, push the NDA's count to 111, just four shy of the 115 required for a majority.

The opposition, led by Congress with 26 members, and its allies total 84 seats. Fence-sitters like the YSR Congress Party with 11 members and the BJD with eight members remain crucial in the equation.

The upcoming by-elections are set to be favorable for the ruling NDA, which is expected to win 11 of the 12 seats, thus crossing the halfway mark to reach 122 seats in the 245-member Rajya Sabha.

Four seats from Jammu and Kashmir remain vacant as the Union Territory is yet to hold its legislative assembly elections, reducing the Rajya Sabha's effective strength to 241.

The by-elections were triggered by 10 sitting Rajya Sabha members, including Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, who were elected to the Lok Sabha. Additionally, two seats are vacant in Telangana and Odisha due to recent resignations by K Keshava Rao and BJD MP Mamata Mohanta, both of whom left their parties and joined Congress and BJP, respectively.

The BJP’s allies in the Upper House include AIADMK, JD(U), NCP, JD(S), RPI(A), Shiv Sena, NPP, and others, strengthening the NDA's position for the upcoming by-elections.
