Kartik Swaminathan’s “The Neighbour” is a film of hope and optimism

Cast - Amit Mishra and Ayesha Saleh

Director - Kartik Swaminathan Venkatraman

Writer - Kartik Swaminathan Venkatraman

Rating – 4.5/5

Mental health and loneliness have always been a concern and many a times forced an individual to end their life. Debate around these has just intensified in 2020 with the month’s long lockdown and more so after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

The Neighbour is a timely short-film distributed by Pocket Films, starring Amit Mishra and Ayesha Saleh, released on YouTube addresses this issue well. The plot starts with the lead character, Drishti sending a text message, informing someone that she wants to end her life. When she is just about to cut her vein, she is interrupted by a door bell. Dhristi’s neighbour, an uninvited guest and a friend insists to let him stay inside her home as he had a fight with his wife. Unwillingly, she allows him inside.

What follows is an intriguing discussion between the two. The basic storyline is very interesting and leaves not only Drishti but the audience too to re-look at their lives. It explains how a person thinks in a disturbed state of mind and help at right time can make them look at the situation differently. The film does give any new message but focuses on re-emphasizing on the well-established messages strongly, packed just in 12 minutes. Moin, played by Amit Mishra has very natural dialogue delivery and is interesting to see how he play a calm and composed friend trying to help his distressed friend. Drishti on the other hand, played by Ayesha expresses pain and grief of the character wonderfully.

The film has already crossed 50K views in less than 2 weeks. Kartik Swaminathan Venkatraman has done a fabulous job in presenting an old theme is new style. Pocket Films is more than a decade old company having more than 5000 videos released.
