Jaishankar & Chinese counterpart Wang meet briefly in Germany

During the Munich Security Conference held in Germany, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi had a brief encounter, marking their first meeting in over six months. The interaction occurred amidst the presence of prominent global figures, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, although details of their conversation have not been officially disclosed by either side.

This rendezvous comes after their last meeting in July, during the ASEAN Regional Forum in Jakarta. India-China relations have been strained since May 2020 following a standoff in eastern Ladakh, leading to a deadly clash. Despite holding numerous corps commanders-level talks and agreeing to withdraw forces from certain points, tensions persist.

India remains adamant about PLA disengagement from areas like Depsang and Demchok, asserting that normalized relations hinge on resolving border issues. Both Jaishankar and Wang participated in the Munich Security Conference, a crucial platform for global policymakers to exchange views.

Wang's address at the conference highlighted the impact of protectionism, security concerns, and unilateralism on the global economy and international systems. He acknowledged ongoing crises such as the Ukraine conflict and Middle East tensions, alongside emerging challenges like artificial intelligence, climate change, and space exploration in polar regions.

Expressing China's commitment to constructive engagement, Wang emphasized cooperation with the United States based on mutual respect and cooperation. He pledged to bolster relations with Russia to ensure strategic stability in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. Additionally, he affirmed China's dedication to its partnership with the European Union, aiming to contribute positively to addressing global turbulence.

Wang underscored China's role in promoting stability and enhancing global governance, aligning with its vision of constructive international participation. As the Director of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Foreign Affairs Commission Office, Wang's statements reflect China's stance on international affairs and its commitment to fostering stability amidst evolving global challenges.
