US Secret Service Director Quits

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday, a day after admitting the agency's failure to prevent an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Cheatle faced bipartisan calls to step down following the July 13 attack at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman wounded the former president and current White House candidate.

"It is overdue; she should have done this at least a week ago," said Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House. "I'm happy to see that she has heeded the call of both Republicans and Democrats."

Cheatle testified before a congressional committee on Monday, describing the attack on Trump, who suffered a slight wound to his right ear, as "the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades." Both parties demanded her resignation, frustrated by her refusal to disclose specific details due to ongoing investigations.

The gunman, armed with an AR-style rifle, fired eight shots from a nearby rooftop shortly after Trump began speaking. He was killed by a Secret Service sniper within 30 seconds of the first shot. Investigators concluded the shooter acted alone and found no strong ideological or political motivations.

Two rally attendees were seriously wounded, and a 50-year-old firefighter, Corey Comperatore, was killed. Trump's former physician, Ronny Jackson, reported that the candidate sustained a two-centimeter gunshot wound on his right ear, with the bullet narrowly missing his head.

Cheatle, a 27-year Secret Service veteran, left in 2021 to lead security for PepsiCo in North America. President Joe Biden appointed her as head of the Secret Service in 2022.
