Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates With Strikes on Nuclear, Energy Sites

Tensions between Israel and Iran reached new heights early Sunday as both countries exchanged fresh attacks, intensifying a dangerous military confrontation. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed it had carried out an “extensive series of strikes” on key Iranian military and nuclear targets in Tehran under Operation Rising Lion.

According to the IDF, strikes targeted the Iranian Ministry of Defence headquarters and the SPND, a shadowy nuclear research organization. The site where Iran allegedly hid its nuclear archive was also bombed. Iran confirmed that its Shahran oil depot and a refinery near Tehran were struck, triggering fires and partial suspension of operations at the South Pars gas field—the world’s largest.

In response, Iran launched another wave of drones and missiles at Israeli cities, with air raid sirens sounding across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. At least seven civilians, including a child and a young woman, were killed, and over 300 were injured. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for targeting Israeli energy infrastructure and fuel facilities for fighter jets.

The Iranian death toll from Israeli strikes has climbed to 78, with more than 320 wounded, according to Iran’s UN envoy. Israel claims its strikes eliminated several top generals, scientists, and nuclear experts.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Operation Rising Lion aimed to neutralize “the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival,” vowing continued action “for as many days as it takes.” He declared that Iran’s nuclear programme has been set back by years.

Meanwhile, US-Iran nuclear talks scheduled in Oman were cancelled. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi cited “barbarous” Israeli attacks, while former US President Donald Trump urged Tehran to negotiate: “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left.”
