India Slams Bangladesh Interim Govt Over Hindu Leader’s Murder
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, expressed deep concern over the incident in a social media post, describing Roy’s murder as part of a "pattern of systematic persecution" of Hindus in Bangladesh. “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh,” Jaiswal wrote. “This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity.”
He further urged the interim government to stop making excuses and take concrete steps to protect all communities. “We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions.”
India’s response comes amidst a growing deterioration in bilateral relations with Bangladesh. Tensions between the two countries have intensified since the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year following massive anti-government protests. Her departure paved the way for an interim administration led by economist Muhammad Yunus.
Since then, violence against minority groups has reportedly surged, with the interim government facing widespread criticism for failing to curb targeted attacks. The recent killing of Roy has deepened concerns in India and fueled calls for international attention on the worsening human rights situation in Bangladesh.
