PM Modi In Italy For G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Apulia, southern Italy, for the G7 Summit's Outreach session and bilateral talks with global leaders. Modi will attend a summit session on Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa-Mediterranean, hosted by Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, with Pope Francis also expected to hold bilateral talks with him.

Expressing anticipation, Modi stated, "I look forward to meeting fellow world leaders and discussing a wide range of issues aimed at making our planet better and improving lives of people." This visit marks his first foreign trip in his third term as Prime Minister.

Modi recalled his 2021 visit to Italy for the G20 Summit and emphasized the momentum in India-Italy relations, highlighting Prime Minister Meloni's two visits to India last year. "We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and bolstering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions," he said.

The Outreach session will focus on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, aligning outcomes from India's G20 Presidency with the G7 Summit. Modi aims to synergize efforts crucial for the Global South.

Italian Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the significance of hosting the summit in Apulia, a message of strengthening dialogue with the Global South. The G7 meeting includes leaders like US President Biden, UK Prime Minister Sunak, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, and others.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict will dominate discussions, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy present. While India advocates "dialogue and diplomacy," Sunak urges decisive support for Ukraine, announcing GBP 242 million in bilateral assistance. India's stance, as reiterated by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, aligns with Modi's 2022 statement, "today's era is not of war," emphasizing assistance to the Global South and Ukraine.

India will continue sharing its perspectives with world leaders during the summit.
