18th Lok Sabha Kicks Off: Oaths Administered to PM Modi and New MPs

18th Lok Sabha Kicks Off: Oaths Administered to PM Modi and New MPs

The first session of Parliament after the Lok Sabha elections began today, with newly-elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking oath. BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab was first administered the oath as the Pro-Tem Speaker by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He then called upon the Prime Minister to take his oath. About 280 newly-elected MPs are taking oath today, while the remaining 260, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, will take oath tomorrow.

Ahead of the key Parliament session, PM Modi criticized the Congress and called the Emergency a "blot" on democracy. He expressed hope that the Opposition would fulfill its role in Parliament, emphasizing the need for debate and diligence over disturbance.

The appointment of Bhartruhari Mahtab as the Pro-Tem Speaker, traditionally given to the senior-most member, has sparked controversy. The Congress, expecting Kodikunnil Suresh, a Dalit leader and an eight-time MP from Kerala, to be named Pro-Tem Speaker, criticized the BJP for Mahtab's appointment.

The Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected on June 26. Until then, the Pro-Tem Speaker will preside over the sessions and conduct the elections for the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker. PM Modi is expected to announce the new Speaker's name on June 26. The Pro-Tem Speaker's role ends once the Speaker is elected by a simple majority, favoring the BJP's candidate.

The Opposition plans to address alleged irregularities in competitive exams NEET and NET. In response to the controversy, the Centre replaced National Testing Agency Director General Subodh Singh and formed a seven-member panel to review the agency's operations. A stringent law to curb exam malpractices has been enacted, imposing a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to ?1 crore. The Congress recently protested over the exam issues, demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. Rahul Gandhi stated he would raise the matter in Parliament.

President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on June 27, outlining the government's roadmap for the next five years. This session concludes on July 3.
