A powerful cloudburst struck Uttarakhand’s Dehradun late on Monday night, triggering flash floods and severe waterlogging across several parts of the city. The sudden downpour submerged houses in Tapovan and inundated the Sahastradhara and IT Park areas, leaving two people missing and causing widespread damage.
The cloudburst, followed by massive flooding in the Karligaad rivulet, washed away a bridge and wreaked havoc along its banks. Authorities swiftly evacuated residents from vulnerable zones to safer locations. Bulldozers were deployed as rescue teams worked through the night to clear debris and restore connectivity.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed on social media that several shops in Sahastradhara had been damaged and assured citizens that he was closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the district administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with the Chief Minister, assuring full central support and stressing that the Union government “stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster.”
Home Minister Amit Shah separately reviewed the situation with Dhami and pledged every possible assistance from the Home Ministry to speed up relief and rescue operations. Expressing gratitude, the Chief Minister said that with the Centre’s guidance and cooperation, relief work in the state would move faster.
District Magistrate Savin Bansal, along with SDM Kumkum Joshi and senior officials, reached the site on Monday night to oversee relief measures. He directed rescue teams, including NDRF and SDRF personnel, to prioritize the search for the two missing persons.
All schools from Class 1 to 12 in Dehradun have been ordered shut as a precautionary measure. Uttarakhand has witnessed several such calamities in recent months, including a cloudburst in Chamoli’s Mopata village in August that left two missing and destroyed livestock shelters.
