GOP Pushes Sweeping Bill to Roll Back Obamacare, Green Energy Tax Breaks

GOP Pushes Sweeping Bill to Roll Back Obamacare, Green Energy Tax Breaks

Republicans are advancing a sweeping legislative package that not only aims to extend $4.5 trillion in Trump-era tax cuts but also dismantles key domestic programs enacted under Presidents Obama and Biden. The 1,000-plus-page bill, championed by House Speaker Mike Johnson, includes controversial provisions targeting Medicaid and green energy tax breaks, stoking fierce political debate as it moves to the Senate.

At stake are the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansions and renewable energy incentives from Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would leave 10.9 million more Americans uninsured, while slashing access to health care for millions through tighter Medicaid eligibility and new work requirements.

Simultaneously, Republicans are seeking a rapid phaseout of green energy tax breaks, including those supporting solar, wind, and EV production. Though initially planned for gradual repeal, the conservative House Freedom Caucus fast-tracked the cuts to take effect just 60 days after passage.

Critics warn these rollbacks would cripple clean energy development. Senators from energy-dependent states, including Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski, have expressed concerns, especially over projects already underway. Businesses nationwide reliant on the credits are lobbying to retain them.

While GOP leaders press forward, divisions persist. Some Republicans, like Sen. Josh Hawley, are resisting deeper Medicaid cuts, recalling past failed efforts to repeal Obamacare. The CBO also projects the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.

Democrats, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, vow to oppose the measure, calling it a stealth rollback of health care and climate progress. “It decimates our health care system, decimates our clean energy system,” Schumer said.

With razor-thin margins in Congress, the bill’s fate remains uncertain as July 4th approaches.
