Food Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday called for a thorough investigation into Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's allegations regarding the use of animal fat in the sacred Tirupati laddus, a claim that has raised concerns among devotees. Speaking at a global food regulators summit, Joshi emphasized the seriousness of the issue. "A detailed enquiry is essential, and those responsible must be held accountable," he said.

The controversy began when Naidu, during an NDA legislative party meeting, accused the previous Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government of using substandard ingredients, including animal fat, in the laddus prepared at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati. Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) later presented a lab report from a Gujarat-based livestock laboratory, which allegedly confirmed the presence of "beef tallow," "lard," and "fish oil" in ghee samples provided by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the managing authority of the temple.

TDP spokesperson Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy shared the lab report at a press conference, showing that the samples, collected on July 9, 2024, were tested on July 16. According to the report, the ghee used during Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure was adulterated with animal fats. However, no official confirmation on the findings has been released by either the Andhra Pradesh government or the TTD.

The ruling YSRCP has denied all allegations. In response to the claims, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has requested a detailed report from Chief Minister Naidu on the matter. The controversy has sparked outrage among devotees of the Tirupati temple, who receive the laddus as sacred prasadam.

As the issue escalates, both religious and political leaders are urging transparency and accountability to address the concerns raised by millions of devotees.
