Devendra Fadnavis Offered To Quit As DCM Over Maharashtra Result

Devendra Fadnavis Offered To Quit As DCM Over Maharashtra Result

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has offered to resign, taking responsibility for the BJP's poor performance in the state's Lok Sabha election. "Whatever loss we suffered in Maharashtra... I take full responsibility. I urge top leadership to relieve me of my ministerial duties," he stated.

Fadnavis attributed the BJP's losses to issues affecting farmers, a problematic voter base since the 2020/21 protests. He also blamed opposition "false propaganda" about constitutional changes, referencing Congress claims that the BJP would alter the Constitution, including dropping 'secular' from the Preamble. He noted the impact of Muslim votes and the Maratha movement.

In 2019, the BJP, then allied with the undivided Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray, won 23 of 25 seats it contested in Maharashtra. This year, allied with splinter groups from the Sena and NCP, the BJP secured only nine seats. Allies led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar won eight of 19 seats.

The opposition, including Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Thackeray’s Sena, won eight of 12 and nine of 21 seats, respectively. The Congress secured 13 of 15 seats. Together, the opposition's 30 seats in Maharashtra helped the INDIA bloc significantly cut the BJP's previous national advantage. The BJP, which claimed 282 seats in 2014 and 303 in 2019, won just 240 this time, 32 short of a majority.

The BJP's poor results in Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, and Tamil Nadu also contributed to its overall decline. Losing Shinde and Pawar's 17 MPs would complicate governance but not immediately endanger the BJP government, unlike potential exits by Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Nitish Kumar's JDU.

Fadnavis’ resignation comes ahead of Maharashtra's next Assembly election. In 2019, the BJP won 105 of 288 seats. The Sena, NCP, and Congress won 56, 54, and 44 seats, respectively. Former Congress leader Ashok Chavan, who joined the BJP this year, was made a Rajya Sabha MP.
