Stampede-Like Situation at Maha Kumbh, few deaths and Injury feared

Stampede-Like Situation at Maha Kumbh, few deaths and Injury feared

A stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya morning left around 30 women injured, prompting Akharas to defer their scheduled Amrit Snan. The incident occurred when barricades collapsed near the Sangam, causing a surge in the crowd. Several women fainted and were rushed to hospitals, including Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College.

Following the chaos, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad President Mahant Ravindra Puri announced that seers would skip their Mauni Amavasya Snan. "Our saints were prepared for the holy dip, but after this incident, we decided to cancel it," he stated. Juna Akhara Patron Mahant Hari Giri urged devotees to bathe in the Ganga at their nearest locations instead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, directing immediate relief measures. Authorities swiftly shut pontoon bridges and reinforced crowd control measures to prevent further incidents.

Despite this, the turnout remains overwhelming. With over 15 crore pilgrims having already participated in the Maha Kumbh, more than 4.8 crore devotees took a dip on Tuesday alone—surpassing the 3.5 crore turnout on Makar Sankranti.

To manage the massive influx, Indian Railways has deployed 360 trains, including 190 special services, ensuring a train runs every four minutes. However, some passengers threw stones at a special train after finding its doors locked.

Over 1,000 medical professionals and 300 specialist doctors have been stationed at Mahakumbh Nagar's super-specialty hospital, equipped for emergency surgeries.

Adding to the spiritual significance, this year's Mauni Amavasya Snan aligns with the rare Triveni Yog, occurring once every 144 years. The Maha Kumbh will continue until February 26, expecting a total footfall of 40-45 crore pilgrims.
