PM Modi Inaugurates World's Largest Surat Diamond Exchange

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Surat Diamond Exchange today, marking its distinction as the world's largest office complex, surpassing even the iconic Pentagon. The sprawling establishment spans an impressive 6.7 million square feet and was finalized in July at a staggering cost of ?32 billion, outshining the 6.5 million square feet expanse of the renowned Pentagon, which has stood since 1943.

This cutting-edge diamond exchange encompasses key facilities, including a 'Customs Clearance House' dedicated to import-export operations, a retail jewelry mall supporting jewelry businesses, and a section for international banking and secure vaults. Despite Mumbai historically serving as India's primary diamond export hub, Surat, often referred to as the "Diamond City," has emerged as a dominant force in the processing of these precious gems. Approximately 90% of the world's rough diamonds undergo cutting and polishing in Surat before reaching buyers in global markets such as the US and China.

The overarching goal of the new diamond exchange is to streamline and centralize the industry by consolidating various facets under one expansive roof. The strategic location and state-of-the-art infrastructure position Surat as a global leader in the diamond trade, fostering efficiency and innovation within the industry.
