The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will be the chief guest for India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2025. This marks President Subianto’s inaugural visit to India as head of state, scheduled from January 25 to 26.
India and Indonesia share a historic and robust partnership as comprehensive strategic partners, with Indonesia playing a pivotal role in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision. “The forthcoming visit provides an opportunity for both nations to review bilateral ties comprehensively and discuss regional and global matters of mutual interest,” the MEA stated.
India’s Republic Day celebrations have a tradition of hosting eminent world leaders as chief guests. In recent years, French President Emmanuel Macron graced the occasion in 2024, while Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was the chief guest in 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the absence of a chief guest in 2021 and 2022.
Notable past invitees include then US President Barack Obama in 2015, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in 2020, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2019. In 2018, leaders of all 10 ASEAN countries attended, reflecting India’s growing engagement in the region.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was the chief guest in 2011, underscoring longstanding ties between India and Indonesia. Other prominent guests over the decades have included global leaders like Nelson Mandela, Nicolas Sarkozy, Shinzo Abe, and Vladimir Putin.
This year’s celebration highlights the deep-rooted connection and shared vision between India and Indonesia, fostering cooperation in areas of strategic and regional importance. President Subianto’s presence reaffirms the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations.
