Embrace a 70-Hour Workweek to Propel India to Global Prominence: Narayan Murthy

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy's call for a 70-hour workweek has stirred a global debate on work hours. He argued that India's work productivity is relatively low and urged the younger generation to contribute to building a culture that can enhance India's competitiveness on the global stage, drawing parallels with countries like Japan and Germany that extended working hours post-World War II. This isn't the first time such suggestions have been made by corporate leaders.

Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, supported Murthy's advice, emphasizing the need to collectively build what other nations accomplished over generations. In 2020, Murthy also called for Indians to work 60 hours a week for a few years to help revive the post-pandemic economy.

Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, once endorsed China's controversial "996" rule, where employees work from 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week. This practice is common in China's tech industry but has faced criticism for its impact on work-life balance.

Elon Musk, the world's wealthiest person and CEO of various companies, asked his Twitter staff, whom he acquired in 2022, to work more than 100 hours per week. These statements have ignited discussions about work-life balance, employee well-being, and the trade-offs associated with extended working hours in different parts of the world.
