Elon Musk Meets Chinese Premier Li Qiang

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, made an unannounced visit to Beijing, where he is anticipated to meet senior officials regarding the rollout of Full Self-Driving (FSD) software and the transfer of data overseas. Chinese state media reported his meeting with Premier Li Qiang, who commended Tesla's contribution to US-China economic cooperation.

Musk confirmed his meeting with Li Qiang, expressing honor and familiarity since their early Shanghai interactions. Tesla's presence in China began with an agreement for a Shanghai plant in 2018. Despite FSD's global launch four years ago, it's yet to be available in China, the company's second-largest market.

Responding to customer demand, Musk hinted at FSD's imminent release in China. Chinese rivals like Xpeng are also advancing autonomous software.

Musk seeks approval to transfer collected Chinese fleet data abroad for autonomous tech development. Tesla has adhered to Chinese data storage regulations since 2021, refraining from US transfers.

His China visit, undisclosed publicly, focused on business matters, with no official comment from Tesla. The state broadcaster didn't specify discussions on FSD or data during Musk's meeting with Li Qiang.

During his visit, Musk also met with Ren Hongbin of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, discussing advancements in China's electric vehicle sector.

Musk's China trip follows the cancellation of an India visit due to company commitments. Tesla recently announced layoffs amidst competitive EV pricing.

Separately, US auto safety regulators are scrutinizing Tesla's December recall adequacy for Autopilot upgrades following crashes.

Musk's engagement in Beijing reflects Tesla's strategic focus on key markets and technological advancement in autonomous driving.
