India Lodges Strong Protest Against Pro-Khalistan Slogans in Presence of Canadian PM

At Toronto's Khalsa Day Celebrations, pro-Khalistan slogans resounded in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, reflecting a surge in anti-India sentiment in Canada.

During PM Trudeau's address at the event, chants of "Khalistan Zindabad" grew louder as he took the stage, captured in a video by Canada's CPAC TV. Similar chants were heard as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre prepared to speak.

Thousands gathered in downtown Toronto for this annual celebration organized by the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council (OSGC) to mark Vaisakhi, commemorating Sikh heritage and the Sikh New Year.

Trudeau, amidst the chants, assured the Sikh community of their rights' protection, emphasizing Canada's strength in diversity. He pledged support against discrimination and hatred, highlighting efforts to enhance security at Sikh community centers and places of worship.

Trudeau's reassurances come amid strained diplomatic relations between Canada and India, exacerbated by the killing of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. His assassination led to allegations from Trudeau, which India denied, resulting in diplomatic tensions.

Trudeau's commitment to defending Sikh values as Canadian values echoes his government's stance on protecting religious freedoms guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
