China's AI Tactics Likely To Target Indian Elections

China's AI Tactics Likely To Target Indian Elections

Microsoft has cautioned about China's plans to disrupt upcoming elections in India, the United States, and South Korea using AI-generated content. This alert follows China's trial during Taiwan's presidential election, where AI was used to influence outcomes.

Bill Gates, in a meeting with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, discussed using AI for social causes and innovation in various sectors. Globally, about 64 countries and the EU are gearing up for elections, covering nearly half of the world's population.

Microsoft's threat intelligence team predicts Chinese state-backed cyber groups, aided by North Korea, targeting 2024 elections. China is expected to employ AI-generated content on social media to sway public opinion.

The danger lies in AI-powered political ads spreading misinformation, including "deepfakes," distorting events and candidates' statements. This could undermine voters' decision-making ability.

While the immediate impact seems low, China's continued experimentation with AI may lead to more effective manipulation over time. Storm 1376, a Beijing-backed group, used AI-generated content during Taiwan's election to discredit candidates.

Chinese groups have also been active in the US, using AI to pose divisive questions and gather intelligence on voting demographics. In the lead-up to the 2024 New Hampshire Democratic primaries, an AI-generated phone call mimicked President Biden's voice, falsely advising against voting.

India's general elections are imminent, unfolding across seven phases from April 19 to June 1. Microsoft's warning underscores the global threat posed by AI in elections, emphasizing the need for vigilance and countermeasures against AI-generated disinformation campaigns.
