Trump Criticizes India’s Tariffs as Trade Talks Advance

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his criticism of India’s high tariffs, claiming they severely restrict American businesses from entering the Indian market. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump asserted that India has long imposed “massive tariffs” on US goods, making trade “almost restrictive.”

“Our country has been ripped off by almost every nation,” Trump said. “India charges us massive tariffs, making it very hard to sell anything there. But now, they have agreed to cut them way down.”

His comments follow Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to the US for trade negotiations with his counterpart, Howard Lutnick. Both nations are working towards a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) aimed at improving trade relations by reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Trump has been vocal about India’s trade policies, often calling the country a “tariff king.” He has also announced that reciprocal tariffs on nations imposing high duties on US goods will take effect on April 2. During his first address to Congress in his second term, Trump again highlighted India's tariff policies, terming them “very unfair.”

In response, India has indicated its willingness to strengthen trade ties with the US. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that both governments are actively negotiating the BTA, which aims to enhance trade in goods and services, expand market access, and integrate supply chains between the two economies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US also underscored efforts to deepen economic cooperation. While India acknowledges the concerns over tariffs, it is working towards a balanced agreement that benefits both nations.

As negotiations continue, the global trade landscape could shift, affecting industries ranging from technology to agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
