Trump Threatens Steep Tariffs on China

Trump Threatens Steep Tariffs on China

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday intensified his criticism of NATO allies over their continued purchases of Russian oil, claiming such actions undermine efforts to end the war in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the war could end swiftly if NATO imposed a complete ban on Russian energy imports, calling the alliance’s current stance “shocking” and insufficient.

“It greatly weakens your negotiating position and bargaining power over Russia,” Trump wrote, accusing NATO of being less than fully committed to defeating Moscow. He also warned that China, the top buyer of Russian energy, could face tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% unless it halts oil imports from Russia.

Trump emphasized that Beijing’s energy ties give it “strong control, and even grip, over Russia,” and insisted that punitive trade measures would “break that grip.” India and Turkey, which ranks third among Russian energy buyers, were also indirectly criticized. Notably, Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia—all NATO members—continue to import Russian oil.

Tensions escalated further after drones originating from Russia entered Polish airspace, prompting the NATO member to shoot them down, raising fears of a broader regional conflict. Meanwhile, pressure is mounting in Congress to strengthen sanctions on Moscow and its allies.

Trump reiterated his belief that the war would not have begun under his leadership, placing blame squarely on President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “This is not TRUMP’S WAR—it is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s,” he declared, noticeably omitting Russian President Vladimir Putin from any blame.

Calling on NATO to “do as I say,” Trump argued that immediate action on oil and trade could end the conflict and save lives. “If not,” he warned, “you are just wasting my time—and the time, energy, and money of the United States.”
