Trump Announces ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ on India, China, and Allies

Trump Announces ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ on India, China, and Allies

US President Donald Trump has unveiled sweeping tariffs on key trading partners, including India and China, aiming to counter what he calls “unfair trade practices.” Speaking at the White House Rose Garden, he declared April 2nd as “Liberation Day,” vowing to reclaim American jobs and industries.

The new tariffs impose a 26% duty on Indian imports and 34% on Chinese goods—half of what the US claims these nations charge American products. Trump described India's tariffs as "very, very tough" and recalled telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi that despite their friendship, the US was not being treated fairly.

The tariffs extend beyond Asia. The European Union faces a 20% levy, while imports from the UK and Japan will be taxed at 10% and 24%, respectively. These rates will be in addition to a newly introduced 10?se import duty, applicable to all products entering the US.

“For far too long, other countries have looted and plundered us while taking advantage of our policies,” Trump said, drawing loud cheers from supporters. “But no longer. We will impose reciprocal tariffs—meaning, we do to them what they do to us. It’s as simple as that.”

He asserted that these measures would restore jobs, revive small and medium businesses, and bolster domestic industries. The White House later clarified that the move was driven by a "national emergency" linked to trade deficits and security concerns.

The 10?seline tariff will take effect at 12:01 AM (US local time) on April 5, while the country-specific tariffs will be enforced from April 9. The move has already sparked concerns among global trade partners, with potential retaliatory measures looming.
