The nation bid a solemn farewell to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, as his last rites were held with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. Distinguished leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, gathered to pay their respects. International dignitaries, including Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay, also attended.
Dr. Singh’s body was first taken to the Congress headquarters, where party workers and admirers paid tribute. The Centre announced a seven-day state mourning in his honour, with flags flying at half-mast. Congress also suspended official events, including its Foundation Day celebration.
Controversy arose over the funeral site, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urging Prime Minister Modi to allocate a permanent memorial space for Dr. Singh. Kharge argued that traditions call for memorials to be established at the funeral sites of former prime ministers. The BJP, however, reminded Congress of its failure to honour former PM Narasimha Rao similarly. The Centre assured that a memorial would be created after consultations.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away due to age-related ailments. Revered as the "architect of India’s economic reforms," he served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, overseeing an era of rapid economic growth. A scholar of global acclaim, Dr. Singh held degrees from Cambridge and Oxford and was a Padma Vibhushan awardee.
World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, mourned his loss, highlighting his legacy of economic modernization and global diplomacy. Dr. Singh leaves behind an indelible mark on India’s history as a statesman, economist, and gentleman leader.
