Israeli media, citing an unnamed official, reported that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval commander Alireza Tangsiri has been killed in a US-Israeli strike near Bandar Abbas. There has been no official confirmation from Tehran or the Israeli military. If verified, the killing would mark one of the most significant losses for Iran in a war now entering its fourth week.

Tangsiri, who led the IRGC Navy since 2018, was a central figure in Iran’s strategy to disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Under his command, Iran tightened control over the vital corridor linking the Persian Gulf to global markets, targeting vessels believed to be connected to US or Israeli interests while allowing limited passage to others.

The impact has been dramatic. Nearly 20 percent of the world’s traded oil and gas typically flows through the strait, but shipping volumes have plunged by about 95 percent in recent weeks. Data suggests that from March 1 to 25, only 155 vessels transited the route, compared to roughly 120 per day in normal conditions. Traffic has slowed to a trickle, with just two westbound ships recorded on a recent day.

Iranian outlets close to the Guards have indicated that Tehran is also formalising a system to charge ships for passage, effectively creating a “toll regime,” with some payments reportedly made in yuan.

Despite a series of high-profile assassinations, including senior adviser Ali Larijani linked to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Iran’s political and military system remains operational. Its layered power structure continues to function, though emerging leadership may adopt a more hardline posture.
