Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a historic visit to Poland today, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 45 years. This visit marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland, underscoring the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland was Morarji Desai in 1979.
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi shared his enthusiasm for the visit, stating, "Leaving for Warsaw. This visit to Poland comes at a special time—when we are marking 70 years of diplomatic ties between our nations. India cherishes the deep-rooted friendship with Poland, further cemented by a commitment to democracy and pluralism."
During his two-day visit from August 21-22, PM Modi will engage in high-level talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. The discussions are expected to cover a broad range of topics, including strengthening strategic partnerships, enhancing defense cooperation, and expanding cultural exchanges. Additionally, PM Modi will address the Indian community in Warsaw, highlighting the importance of the diaspora in fostering bilateral relations.
European Parliament member Dariusz Jonski has described the visit as "very important," reflecting the significance of this milestone in India-Poland relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has emphasized the historical connections between the two nations, particularly recalling Poland's role in Operation Ganga in 2022, which helped evacuate over 4,000 Indian students from Ukraine during the conflict. This act of solidarity, along with the refuge provided by India to over 6,000 Polish women and children during World War II, continues to serve as the foundation of their strong bilateral ties.
Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Kyiv on August 23 for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, further underscoring India's active engagement in global diplomacy during a time of significant geopolitical developments
