National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan on Wednesday formally filed his nomination for the Vice President’s post, accompanied by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a battery of senior Union ministers, in what was seen as a strong show of unity ahead of the September 9 election.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President J.P. Nadda, Health Minister, and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari were among the leaders who walked alongside Mr. Radhakrishnan, currently serving as Maharashtra Governor. Four sets of nomination papers were submitted to the returning officer, with Prime Minister Modi’s name leading the list of proposers.
Before filing his papers, Mr. Radhakrishnan visited the Prerna Sthal in the Parliament complex, bowing before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and paying tributes to other national icons.
The NDA announced his candidature on Sunday, with J.P. Nadda making the declaration after a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board in Delhi. A seasoned BJP leader, Mr. Radhakrishnan has been elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore and has held the post of Tamil Nadu BJP chief. He has also served as Governor of Jharkhand and Telangana, earning a reputation for his administrative experience and grounded political style.
Prime Minister Modi, praising his “dedication, humility, and intellect,” highlighted Mr. Radhakrishnan’s long record of grassroots service in Tamil Nadu. On Tuesday, the NDA Parliamentary Party formally felicitated him in New Delhi.
With the NDA commanding a comfortable majority in the electoral college of MPs from both Houses of Parliament, his victory is seen as a near certainty. The Opposition is expected to announce its nominee shortly, though the arithmetic is heavily stacked in the ruling alliance’s favour.
