Indian PM bestowed Bhutan's ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo'

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with Bhutan's highest civilian award, the ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo,' becoming the first foreign Head of Government to receive this prestigious accolade. The award recognizes Modi's exceptional contributions to strengthening India-Bhutan relations and his dedicated service to the Bhutanese nation and its people.

Expressing his gratitude, Modi shared on social media platform X, "Honored to be conferred with 'Order of the Druk Gyalpo' Award by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 140 crore Indians." The award was presented by Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck during Prime Minister Modi's two-day State visit, marking his third visit since assuming office in 2014.

The announcement of this honor was made by the Bhutanese King during the 114th National Day celebrations on December 17, 2021. The ‘Order of the Druk Gyalpo' is recognized as the pinnacle of Bhutan's honor system, symbolizing a lifetime achievement and holding precedence over all other orders, decorations, and medals in the country.

In addition to this prestigious award, Modi has previously received international recognition, including the ‘Legion of Merit by the US Government' award from the US Armed Forces in 2020 and Russia's highest civilian honor, the ‘Order of St. Andrew' award, in 2019.

During his visit to Bhutan, Modi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Bhutanese people and emphasized the significance of India-Bhutan friendship, aiming to strengthen ties in line with India's ‘Neighbourhood First' Policy.

The visit underscores India's commitment to fostering enduring relationships with its neighbors, especially with Bhutan, and highlights the mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations in various areas of strategic importance.
