The high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash in the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to go ahead as scheduled on February 15 in Colombo, according to sources familiar with the discussions, bringing temporary calm to what had threatened to become a major diplomatic and sporting flashpoint.
After days of uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has indicated its willingness to step back from an earlier decision to boycott the Group A encounter. The proposed boycott was announced after Pakistan’s government expressed solidarity with Bangladesh, which was dropped from the tournament following its refusal to travel to India for its matches. The standoff had raised concerns within the ICC about the integrity and continuity of the World Cup.
The breakthrough came after a crucial meeting in Lahore involving senior officials from the PCB, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). While the PCB has softened its stance, it has stopped short of issuing a formal statement. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has maintained that consultations are still underway and that a final call will be taken only after briefing and receiving guidance from Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Naqvi is expected to meet the Prime Minister later on Monday to outline the latest developments.
During negotiations, the PCB placed three key demands before the ICC: the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan, the launch of a proposed India-Pakistan-Bangladesh tri-series, and a firm assurance regarding India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2026. However, sources indicate that the ICC, under chairman Jay Shah, rejected all three proposals, reiterating that bilateral series fall outside the ICC’s jurisdiction and must be decided by the respective boards and governments.
Despite the unresolved political undertones, preparations for the marquee India-Pakistan contest are moving ahead, much to the relief of broadcasters, sponsors and fans worldwide. On the Indian side, the focus remains firmly on cricket, with head coach Gautam Gambhir hosting a special dinner for Team India as part of preparations for the global tournament.
For now, cricket has prevailed, even as diplomacy continues quietly in the background.
