India Overtakes Japan to Become World’s Fourth-Largest Economy

India has officially become the fourth-largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan, according to NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam. Addressing the media after the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam highlighted the country’s accelerating economic momentum, citing International Monetary Fund (IMF) data to confirm the milestone.

“As I speak, we are a USD 4 trillion economy. Only the United States, China, and Germany are ahead of us,” he said, noting that if India continues on its current trajectory, it could become the world’s third-largest economy within the next 2.5 to 3 years.

Subrahmanyam attributed this growth to a favorable geopolitical and economic climate, as well as robust domestic policy initiatives. “The global and regional environments are aligning in our favor. The fundamentals of our economy are strong, and our policy framework is focused and clear,” he added.

When asked about former US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks demanding that Apple iPhones sold in the US be manufactured domestically rather than in countries like India, Subrahmanyam downplayed concerns. “The situation with US tariffs is still evolving, but India remains one of the most cost-effective and efficient manufacturing destinations globally,” he stated.

He also revealed that the government is preparing a second round of the National Asset Monetisation Pipeline, with a formal announcement expected in August. The initiative is aimed at unlocking value in public sector assets to finance new infrastructure projects.

India’s rise to the fourth spot is a significant achievement, reflecting both the resilience of its economy and the results of sustained structural reforms. With continued policy focus, India appears well-positioned to climb even higher in the global economic rankings in the coming years.
