Double Trouble: Kejriwal Faces Two New ED Summons Amidst Election Season

Double Trouble: Kejriwal Faces Two New ED Summons Amidst Election Season

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is facing fresh summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), as disclosed by his cabinet colleague Atishi. One summons pertains to the Delhi liquor policy case, while the other is related to an alleged false case linked to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). Atishi raised concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the DJB case and speculated that it might be a tactic to impede Kejriwal's participation in the Lok Sabha elections.

Kejriwal has been directed to appear before the ED on Monday regarding the DJB case and on Thursday regarding the liquor policy case. He has previously avoided eight summonses in the liquor policy case, contesting their legality. Despite securing bail for missing six of these summonses, the BJP criticized Kejriwal for evading the law and urged him to cooperate with the agency.

Responding to the ongoing situation, Delhi BJP leader Harish Khurrana accused Kejriwal of dodging legal proceedings and playing the victim card. The BJP emphasized that the ED's summonses were issued within legal bounds and questioned Kejriwal's reluctance to address the agency's queries.

Atishi alleged that the fresh summonses coincided with the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates, implying a strategic move by the BJP to hinder Kejriwal's electoral activities. She accused the BJP of leveraging government agencies like the ED and CBI to target political adversaries.

The ED is investigating potential money laundering aspects in the revoked Delhi excise policy of 2021-22, allegedly favoring specific liquor dealers, although the AAP has refuted these claims. The recent arrest of BRS leader K Kavitha in this case adds complexity to the ongoing investigation.

In the DJB case, the ED has alleged that bribes from a Delhi government tender were channeled as electoral funds to the AAP. This investigation involved raids on individuals associated with Kejriwal, including his personal assistant, an AAP MP, a former DJB member, and others earlier this year. Two individuals were arrested in January in connection with bribery allegations related to a DJB contract awarded irregularly.

Overall, the developments highlight the intensifying legal and political scrutiny faced by Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP, with ongoing investigations and summons raising questions about governance and electoral integrity.
