Amit Shah Hints at AFSPA Repeal, Troop Withdrawal in J&K

Amit Shah Hints at AFSPA Repeal, Troop Withdrawal in J&K

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Tuesday that the central government is considering the possibility of revoking the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir. During an interview with the JK Media Group, Shah disclosed plans to withdraw troops from the Union Territory (UT) and entrust law and order responsibilities solely to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Shah emphasized the transformation in public trust towards the Jammu and Kashmir Police, noting that they now effectively lead operations. Regarding the controversial AFSPA, which grants broad powers to armed forces personnel in disturbed areas, including search, arrest, and use of force for public order maintenance, Shah stated that reconsideration for its revocation is underway.

The AFSPA is typically imposed in areas notified as disturbed to aid armed forces' operations. Shah highlighted the removal of AFSPA in 70% of areas in northeastern states and contrasted this with its continued enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir.

This announcement signifies a potential shift in security measures in Jammu and Kashmir, indicating a move towards greater reliance on local law enforcement agencies and potentially reducing the presence and powers of armed forces under AFSPA in the region.
