Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, 74, has resigned from his constitutional post citing medical advice and the need to prioritise his health. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said his resignation is effective immediately under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately," the letter stated.

The resignation came late in the evening after Dhankhar spent the day in the Rajya Sabha, administering the oath of office to eight new members. His sudden decision has come as a surprise, particularly as he still had over two years remaining in his term.

In his farewell note, he expressed gratitude to President Murmu for her "unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship" they shared. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, calling their cooperation "invaluable."

Dhankhar, who assumed office in 2022 after defeating Opposition nominee Margaret Alva, had been dealing with health issues in recent months. He was admitted to AIIMS in March due to cardiac concerns and fainted during an event at Kumaon University last month.
