Union Budget 2026 is poised to mark a decisive break from a 75-year-old convention

Union Budget 2026 is poised to mark a decisive break from a 75-year-old convention

For the first time, Part B of the Budget—traditionally reserved for tax proposals and policy fine print—is likely to take centre stage, laying out a comprehensive vision for India’s economic trajectory, according to sources.

Historically, the big ideas and fiscal philosophy were unveiled in Part A, while Part B remained technical in scope. This year, however, the government is expected to reverse that emphasis. Part B is likely to present a calibrated roadmap addressing immediate economic priorities while anchoring India’s long-term ambitions as it moves deeper into the 21st century.

The proposed shift is being closely watched by economists and policy observers both in India and overseas, who see it as a signal that the Budget may go well beyond routine revenue and taxation measures, offering instead a strategic blueprint aligned with India’s domestic strengths and expanding global footprint.

The upcoming presentation will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive Union Budget—an unprecedented milestone. Since taking office in 2019, she has also redefined Budget symbolism, replacing the colonial-era leather briefcase with a traditional red-cloth bahi-khata. Continuing with recent practice, the 2026 Budget will be presented in a fully paperless format, underscoring the government’s push towards digital governance.
