Tsunami Threat Over Pacific After Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Near Russia

A powerful 8.8 magnitude undersea earthquake struck early today off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings and advisories across the Pacific region. The quake, which occurred at approximately 03:17 local time near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, has been classified by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as one of the top ten most powerful earthquakes recorded globally.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has confirmed that tsunami waves have already reached coastal areas. Alaska was the first to be impacted, while in Hawaii, waves as high as 4 feet (1.2 metres) were recorded in Haleiwa on Oahu’s north shore. Waves are arriving at 12-minute intervals, with some areas bracing for surges as high as 10 feet.

Authorities in Hawaii, Alaska, and parts of Northern California have issued urgent warnings, urging residents to stay away from the coastline and seek higher ground. The Aleutian Islands and northern California communities are also under active tsunami alerts. Meanwhile, advisories remain in effect for other parts of the U.S. Pacific coast as federal agencies continue real-time monitoring.

The initial earthquake was followed by several strong aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.9 in magnitude, raising further concern about seismic instability in the region.

In Japan, nearly two million residents have been advised to evacuate from vulnerable coastal zones. Popular beaches such as Inage Beach in Chiba prefecture have been closed, with authorities establishing safety perimeters.

Both the PTWC and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are closely tracking the tsunami’s path, with projected arrival times varying by location. Officials urge coastal communities to remain alert and follow all safety instructions as the situation unfolds.
