Trump Declares Global Tariffs Ahead of ‘Liberation Day’

US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping tariffs on all countries, signaling a radical shift in global trade policy just days before what he calls “Liberation Day” on April 2. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed that the tariffs would apply to every nation, dismissing earlier speculation that only a select few countries would be targeted.

“We’re starting with all countries—no exceptions. Let’s see what happens,” Trump told reporters. He rejected rumors that tariffs would be imposed only on a “Dirty 15” list of nations engaged in what his administration sees as unfair trade practices.

The move follows earlier US tariffs on Chinese steel, aluminum, and other imports, with new auto tariffs set to take effect on April 3. Trump’s top trade advisor, Peter Navarro, stated that tariffs on auto imports alone could generate $100 billion annually, while tariffs on all imports could raise $600 billion per year—amounting to $6 trillion over the next decade.

While Trump insists these tariffs will boost American manufacturing and government revenue, economists warn that the costs will ultimately fall on US consumers. They caution that higher prices on imported goods could lead to inflation, job losses, and an economic downturn.

Despite these concerns, Trump defended his strategy, claiming, “They ripped us off like no country has ever been ripped off in history, and we’re still being kinder than they were to us.” He dismissed warnings of economic harm, calling tariffs his “favorite word in the dictionary” and a tool to “make America great again.”

Countries worldwide have condemned the move, with many promising retaliatory measures. Meanwhile, India is negotiating a trade deal to avoid the tariff fallout, while others brace for a full-blown trade war.
