President's Address Amplifies BJP's Critique of Congress Over Emergency

President's Address Amplifies BJP's Critique of Congress Over Emergency

President Droupadi Murmu, in her first address to Parliament after the recent general election, called the 1975 Emergency the darkest chapter of a direct attack on the Constitution. She emphasized the resilience of the Constitution, stating, "The imposition of Emergency on 25th June 1975, was the biggest and darkest chapter of direct attack on the Constitution. The entire country felt outraged." Despite this, she noted, "the country emerged victorious over such unconstitutional forces as the traditions of the republic lie at the core of India," amidst cheers from the treasury benches and protests by the Opposition.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar echoed these sentiments, criticizing the Emergency for its constitutional assault. The President's remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the ruling BJP and the Opposition, with the latter accusing the current government of an "undeclared emergency."

Murmu stressed the government's commitment to the Constitution, stating, "My Government also does not consider the Constitution of India as just a medium of governance; rather we are making efforts to ensure that our Constitution becomes a part of public consciousness." She highlighted India's economic achievements, noting its rise from the 11th to the 5th largest economy since 2014, and the goal of becoming the third-largest economy, emphasizing equal focus on manufacturing, services, and agriculture.

Addressing the NEET exam irregularities, Murmu assured that the government is committed to investigating paper leaks and punishing the guilty. She underscored the importance of sanctity and transparency in government recruitments and exams.

The President also called for smooth parliamentary functioning, distinguishing between opposition to policies and obstruction, and expressed confidence in the Parliament's effective use of time and prioritization of public interest.
