Heavy Downpour Batters NCR Region, T1 Airport Terminal collapses

Heavy Downpour Batters NCR Region, T1 Airport Terminal collapses

Torrential rainfall in Delhi-NCR that started yesterday, led to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic jams this morning. According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall from 8:30 am yesterday to 8:30 am today, marking the highest 24-hour rainfall in June since 1936, when 235.5 mm of rain was recorded. Typically, Delhi receives an average of 80.6 mm of rain in June.

This morning, a portion of the roof at Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 (T1) collapsed on cars due to heavy rain, resulting in one fatality and six injuries. The Terminal 1, which handles only domestic flights, has temporarily suspended all departures, as the civil aviation ministry announced.

"Heavy rain in the early morning today has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi airport Terminal 1. As a result, flights to and from Terminal 1 have been closed until further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for smooth operation of the flights," the ministry stated in a post on X.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the site to inspect the damage at Terminal 1. He announced that the airport would temporarily relocate operations to Terminals 2 and 3 to ensure the continuity of services.

Efforts are underway to manage the disruption and assist affected passengers. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene, providing medical assistance to the injured and securing the area to prevent further harm. Authorities are investigating the structural integrity of the terminal to prevent future incidents.

In addition to the immediate response, the ministry is coordinating with airlines and other stakeholders to minimize the impact on travel plans. Passengers scheduled to depart from Terminal 1 are being redirected to Terminals 2 and 3, and airlines are working to rebook flights and notify travelers of the changes.

This incident highlights the challenges posed by extreme weather and underscores the importance of maintaining infrastructure resilience. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has promised a thorough investigation and the implementation of necessary measures to enhance safety and prevent such occurrences in the future.

As operations shift and repairs commence, passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight information and to allow extra time for travel to the newly designated terminals. The ministry assures that all efforts are being made to restore normalcy and ensure passenger safety.
