Maldives Opposition Leader Tells President Muizzu To Seek Apology From India

Maldives Opposition Leader Tells President Muizzu To Seek Apology From India

Qasim Ibrahim, a leader of the Maldives Jumhooree Party (JP), has called upon Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to issue a formal apology to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India. This request follows escalating tensions in the Maldivian Parliament, where clashes erupted between pro-government MPs and opposition lawmakers over the approval of four cabinet members. The main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a parliamentary majority, has announced its intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muizzu in response to these developments.

In light of these events, Ibrahim emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relations with neighboring countries and urged restraint in public statements that could strain diplomatic ties. He highlighted President Solih's previous actions, including issuing a Presidential Decree to ban the "India Out" campaign, as a demonstration of responsible state leadership. Ibrahim also pointed out discrepancies, questioning why Muizzu, who had previously participated in the "India Out" campaign alongside former President Abdulla Yameen, has not revoked the Presidential Decree as demanded by Yameen. These developments underscore the delicate balance between domestic politics and international relations in the Maldives.
