Global Microsoft Outage Spares China's Key Sectors

Global Microsoft Outage Spares China's Key Sectors

Microsoft's global outage created havoc on Friday, affecting industries from airlines to broadcasting and bringing daily operations to a standstill. However, China remained largely unaffected by the disruption. According to a report by the South China Morning Post, the country's airline and banking sectors were not impacted due to the tech glitch, as China relies on its own infrastructure to support daily operations. Chinese state media also reported that operations at Beijing airports were unaffected.

In contrast, a woman working for a foreign company in Shanghai noted that colleagues in her office experienced the blue screen error. Her screen displayed the message, “Recovery. It looks like Windows didn't load correctly.”

Social media reactions in China highlighted some issues. Users reported difficulties accessing information about international hotels. Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media platform similar to Instagram, was filled with complaints about the glitch.

The Microsoft outage was triggered by a software update from CrowdStrike, a US-based cybersecurity firm. The update aimed to enhance security by updating the threats it defends against. However, a glitch in the update caused IT systems to encounter the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error, leading to sudden shutdowns or restarts.
