Lok Sabha stormy debates on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam Attack

A stormy debate erupted in the Lok Sabha on Monday over Operation Sindoor, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserting that the military operation was paused only after achieving its “politico-military objectives,” dismissing any suggestion of foreign pressure. Singh emphasized the strikes were precise, non-escalatory, and destroyed seven terror camps across PoK and Pakistan in just 22 minutes.

“Operation Sindoor was a symbol of India’s resolve. It was Pakistan’s DGMO who pleaded for a cessation,” Singh said. He underlined that India had irrefutable proof of the damage caused and no civilian casualties were reported.

However, the Opposition launched a scathing attack, demanding accountability for the security lapses in the Pahalgam terror attack and clarity over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire using trade pressure. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi asked pointedly, “If Pakistan was ready to kneel, why did we stop? Before whom did the Prime Minister surrender?”

Gogoi questioned the government on the number of jets reportedly lost, referencing Trump’s remarks, and demanded answers for the alleged failure to prevent the Pahalgam attack. “The Defence Minister spoke of vengeance, but who allowed the terrorists to strike in the first place?” he asked.

Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee took a swipe at PM Modi, accusing him of shrinking before Trump’s stature and demanded answers on the claimed downing of five Indian jets.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar rebutted Trump’s assertions, stating no trade was discussed in relation to the operation, and confirmed the ceasefire request came from Pakistan. He noted only three UN members opposed India’s right to self-defence.

Home Minister Amit Shah slammed the Congress for trusting Trump over India’s ministers, declaring, “That is why they’re in Opposition — and will remain there for 20 years.”
