Israel will have overall security responsibility in Gaza after war: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with ABC News, has stated that Israel intends to maintain "overall security responsibility" in Gaza for an indefinite period following the conflict with Hamas. This marks a clear indication of Israel's intention to retain control over the territory, which is home to approximately 2.3 million Palestinians.

Netanyahu explicitly ruled out a general ceasefire unless more than 240 captives, who were seized by Hamas during a raid into Israel on October 7, are released. However, he expressed openness to implementing "tactical little pauses" in the ongoing hostilities.

On the same day, U.S. President Joe Biden discussed the necessity for humanitarian pauses with Netanyahu during a call, but no formal agreement was reached, according to the White House.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a tragic toll on the Palestinian side. As reported by the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza, the Palestinian death toll has exceeded 10,000, including over 4,100 children and 2,640 women. This staggering loss of life underscores the severity of the humanitarian crisis in the region and the challenges in finding a resolution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
